Compact Fluorescent Bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, a heavy metal that has been linked to child development problems and damage to unborn development. The compact flourescent bulbs are quite safe unless they are broken, at which point the mercury can become airborn. What is recommended, leave the room for at least 15 minutes, use a wet cloth to clean up the broken glass and powder. So at what point is it safe to use these bulbs........I don't use them......how do you dispose of them? well if you're the average homeowner that uses them, you'll probably just toss them in the garbage where they end up in the landfill..........so now that you've done your part for the environment by changing to the flourescent you've tossed mercury into the ground and eventually seeping into the water system.
Well thanks a whole lot for poisioning the water table..........was it worth the warm fuzzy feel good you had helping the environment?
